Acid Water: Read Before You Buy

Acid Water: Read Before You Buy

This post is an information advisory for customers who plan to make use of the “acid water” feature available on water ionizers.

One of the most common technical support calls I receive is about acid water.   Getting alkaline water at a pH of 9.5 or higher is pretty easy.  Getting acid water is a different story.  If you are buying a water ionizer with the intention of using the acid water settings there are a few things you need to know.

The most important thing to know is that the strongest acid water will always come from the acid drain hose when the unit is set to produce the strongest alkaline water.  Some customers have had a plumber tie their acid drain hose directly into the drain pipe below the sink – their best acid water goes right down the drain.

Next, SOURCE WATER MATTERS.   I have found that most of my customers’ source water is on the hard side with a base pH that is between 7.0 and 8.5.  The harder your source water, the more challenging it is to produce acid water.   The more alkaline your source water, the more challenging it is to produce acid water.  Customers who have water that is considered “soft” report the best acid water production.

Most water ionizers will have 2 to 4 acid level settings available.  These settings are designed to allow you to dispense acid water from the dispenser hose – which gives a better flow rate than the acid drain hose.  “Soft water” customers are often able to get good quality acid water at the desired levels using the acid water presets on their water ionizers.

Customers with harder source water or source water that is alkaline sometimes struggle to get below a 5.5 on the strongest acid preset level.  Some customers have challenges even getting this level of acid water from the acid drain hose.

This is NOT unique to any one water ionizer.  I’ve had this reported with almost every make and model water ionizer that I’ve sold.

If you plan to use the acid settings on your water ionizer and know that you are in a hard water area or that your source water is slightly alkaline, please contact me so that I can help you make the best selection to suit your needs.
