Uses for Ionized Water

Uses for Ionized Water

pHI get a surprising number of inquiries from people asking about t he different uses for ionized water. The industry has done a good job promoting the 2 basic uses for ionized water – 9.5 alkaline for drinking and strong acid water for disinfecting – but I am finding that a lot of water ionizer owners still have questions about the best uses for ionized water at the different pH settings available.

This is a (relatively) brief guide to using ionized water at the settings found on most water ionizers. In the weeks to come I’ll be working on a more in depth water ionizer user guide. For now I hope this helps users out there get the most out of their investment in a water ionizer.

Safety First

While drinking alkaline ionized water is a great way to hydrate, alkalize and remove toxins from the body, there are some times when drinking ionized water is not advised.

  • With Medications: Most medications are designed to be released into the body at a specific rate over a certain period of time. Taking medications with alkaline ionized water can speed medications into your system much more quickly than when you take them with regular tap or filtered water. This can alter the effectiveness of the medication and in some cases can cause an unpleasant reaction as “time-release” or “sustained release” medications are delivered full strength into the blood stream. Always at least a 45 minute buffer between the time you take any medication and your next glass of alkaline ionized water. That’s 45 minutes on either side – before taking the medication and after taking it. This will allow prescription medications to work in the manner intended.
  • Near or at Mealtime: The stomach contains acids that are necessary for breaking down foods for digestion so that the body can absorb their nutrients. Drinking alkaline ionized water too close to mealtimes can cause problems with the digestive process by neutralizing those acids. For most people, a 30-minute buffer on either side of the meal will allow the “digestive juices” to be present and ready to properly digest a meal. For some, a 45 minute to 1 hour buffer may be required.

All water ionizers have a “neutral” setting. At this setting, water produced by the unit is filtered but no ionization is taking place. The water may be slightly more alkaline than your source water thanks to the filtration media in most water ionizers, but is still acceptable for drinking with meals or near mealtimes. If you’re drinking water with snacks between meals you should use the neutral setting and wait 15 – 20 minutes before drinking alkaline ionized water after the snack.

Uses for ALKALINE Ionized Water

8.0 – 9.0 pH: This is the typical range at the first/lowest setting of most water ionizers. This level of water is best suited for:

  • First time use – when you first start drinking alkaline ionized water it is recommended that you start at the lowest alkaline level to allow your body to gently begin releasing toxins and restoring pH balance.
  • Young Children – having been exposed to environmental and other toxins for significantly less time than adults, younger children are better served by drinking milder alkaline ionized water. Their systems are still developing and drinking water at the lower alkaline levels allows their natural pH buffers to continue to develop naturally.
  • Pets – unless you have an older pet that is suffering from a chronic illness, the lower alkaline settings are often best for your fuzzy, feathered or scaly companion. You should never use alkaline ionized water to fill a fish tank.

9.0 – 9.5 pH: This is the most commonly recommended level for drinking water.

Alkaline ionized water at this level is suited for:

  • Drinking throughout the day and evening.
  • Mixing nutritional shakes from powder.
  • Taking most nutritional supplements. (Taking Niacin with alkaline ionized water at any level can cause a rapid and unpleasant “flush”)
  • Taking with powdered aspirin for faster relief from headaches, muscle aches and other minor pain.
  • Drinking before, during and after physical exertion for reduced physical recovery time, improved physical performance and reduced muscle fatigue.

10.0 and higher: This is the most commonly recommended level for drinking water.

Alkaline ionized water at this level is suited for:

  • Making coffee, teas and soups
  • Great for marinades – either on its own, adding some salt and herbs or instead of “regular water” in your favorite marinade recipe
  • Soaking baking pans or any cooking pot, pan or utensil that has a baked-on/burnt-on sticky mess. You’ll use much less “elbow grease” scrubbing them clean!
  • Rinsing produce to remove chemical and pesticide residue
  • Soaking fruits and vegetables – can make strawberries less tart and more sweet and reduce the bitter taste sometimes found in celery
  • Reducing toughness and the gamy flavor of free-range or “I hunted it and killed it myself” meats.

Uses for ACIDIC Ionized Water

5.5 – 6.5 pH: This pH range is usually available at the lowest acid setting on your water ionizer and is suitable for:

  • Cooking rice, oats and other grains as well as boiling potatoes.
  • Washing your face, brushing your teeth or as a mild skin toner
  • Watering plants – most plants love acidic water!
  • Soaking/storing produce like celery, broccoli and carrots to maintain “crispness” – soaking veggies that have “gone soft” in the fridge in this water will restore crispness.

5.5 – 4.5 pH: This is the 2nd acid level available on most water ionizers and is suitable for:

  • Washing your face and as a skin toner.
  • Treating cuts, scrapes & burns to slow bleeding and speed up healing times.
  • As a compress to treat “pimples” and other skin breakouts, rashes and skin “growths” that start appearing with age.
  • Soaking produce to kill bacteria – at this pH level it takes approximately 20 minutes to kill most bacteria.
  • Sterilizing cutting boards – spray or rinse wood cutting boards with water in this pH range prior to storing to prevent bacteria growth.
  • Cleaning windows, mirrors and other glass or reflective surfaces.
  • Keeping counter tops clean – this pH level won’t kill bacteria on contact but will keep your counter tops looking nice and help prevent bacterial growth.
  • As a soak (20 minutes or longer) to treat foot fungi and eliminate foot odor.
  • Cooking rice, pasta, grains or boiling vegetables like potatoes that tend to get too “mushy” if overcooked.
  • Plants love this level of acid water too!

4.5 – 3.5 pH: This is typically the strongest acid water produce by most water ionizers.

This will usually be the 3rd setting if you have that option on your model. If you have a model that allows you to adjust the pH within the preset buttons you can adjust the unit to this level and use the water for:

  • Strong toner/astringent for problem acne.
  • As a spritz or compress to treat rashes, eczema and other skin problems.
  • Treating insect bites, stings or wounds.
  • Water at this pH level can help stop bleeding in minor cuts, scrapes and other wounds.
  • Soaking feet to treat fungus or foot odor.
  • Relieving itchy skin for both humans and pets.
  • I’ve found that spraying cracks, corners and baseboards repels ants.
  • Snorting (yes, I said snorting) this level of acid water can help relieve sinus congestion.
  • As a sprtiz or compress to relieve the itch and swelling of hemorrhoids.

3.5 – 2.5 pH: Some water ionizers are able to produce pH at this level.

If you are unable to achieve this level of pH with your water ionizer – whether it is due to a source water issue or the available settings on the unit, you can add citric acid powder or crystals to the strongest level of acid water produced to drop the pH down to 2.5pH or lower.

The 2.5 pH level is difficult to achieve and if your source water is hard or naturally alkaline, you may be unable to achieve the 2.5 pH level with any water ionizer. Regardless, adding citric acid powder or water will drop the pH to the desired level, you’ll just need to go through a little trial and error to determine how much citric acid to add to achieve the pH level you want.

Acid water at this level can be used for:

  • Everything listed at the 4.5 – 3.5 level.
  • Water at the 2.5 pH level can kill germs and bacteria within seconds of contact.

These are some of the most common uses for alkaline ionized water but the possibilities are endless. If you’ve found a use for either alkaline or acidic ionized water, please feel free to share. Your comments are always welcome.
