Water Filtration Comparison

Water Filtration Comparison

filtrationStarting with quality source water will help you get the best results from your water ionizer.  Pre-filters can help to extend the life of the filter inside some water ionizers.  Every standard countertop and under-counter water ionizer will have a carbon element for chlorine removal.  Some will also have a ceramic element as well.

Most people using a municipal water supply opt to not pre-filter.  For those using well water, prefiltration is a good idea to maintain the long-term performance of a water ionizer and improve the quality and taste of the water.

In this comparison you’ll find removal rates of common contaminants based on the type of filtration media used.

BENEFITS OF GRANULATED ACTIVATED CARBON (GAC) / CARBON BLOCK

  • Eliminates chlorine, taste and odor, and chemicals.
  • Carbon block can take away cysts if pore size is complete 3 micron or less.

DETRIMENTS OF GRANULATED ACTIVATED CARBON (GAC) / CARBON BLOCK

  • Remains unable to take out heavy metals (carbon block is able to eliminate undissolved lead)
  • Bacteria can grow rapidly in filter (silver is mostly used, but it is believed to be a toxin by the EPA and as such must be registered with them).
  • Limited life because of double job – chlorine and chemicals.
  • Carbon block filters can block with residue long before filter is bushed.

BENEFITS OF REVERSE OSMOSIS (RO)

  • Eliminates chlorine, taste and odor, and chemicals with carbon pre-filter or post-filter.
  • Good for taking out heavy metals, like lead.
  • Not suggested but can be good to eliminate cysts.

DETRIMENTS OF REVERSE OSMOSIS (RO)

  • Time-consuming processing- takes 2 hours to produce 1 gallon of treated water.
  • High water wastage – 4 – 5 gallons of water go down the drain to treat 1 gallon.
  • Takes out healthful minerals, just like calcium and magnesium.
  • When these minerals are removed, it leaves flat tasting water.
  • Bacteria can pollute membrane.
  • High-priced to maintain.

BENEFITS OF DISTILLATION

  • Eliminates chlorine, taste and odor, and chemicals with carbon post-filter.
  • Good in taking out heavy metals, for example lead.
  • Good to kill bacteria.
  • Effective in killing cysts.

DETRIMENTS OF DISTILLATION

  • Time taking procedure – takes 5 hours to create 1 gallon of treated water.
  • Wastage of energy – uses up 25 cents of electricity to treat one gallon of water.
  • Takes out nourishing minerals, like calcium and magnesium.
  • Elimination of these minerals leaves flat tasting water.
  • Needs repeated cleaning of tank, regular replacement of carbon post filter.
